Donors: Distribution Week is around the corner!

All gifts must be received no later than 7pm on Thursday, December 10.  We cannot guarantee your family will receive their gifts if dropped off after this deadline.
Please package each family separately and ensure the family’s gifts are completed, gift-wrapped and properly labeled prior to dropping them off.  We cannot accept partial donations for a family.
Preparing gifts for dropoff:
  • Each gift must be wrapped and labeled with the Family Number and child's first name. We ask for this to identify the family a package belongs to if a bag breaks or the outer number falls off.  For example:
  • Package the wrapped gifts for each family in sturdy boxes or thick, plastic bags. Please avoid large, red Santa sacks as they are difficult for the volunteers and recipients to carry.
  • Identify each box or bag of gifts with the Family Number, total number of boxes or bags for the family, and the number of that particular bag in succession.  For example:
Dropping off gifts:
  • Gifts should be dropped off at Elks Lodge #850, 380 Social Street, Woonsocket, between 8am and 8pm on the date corresponding to the family number:
  • If your families are scheduled to deliver on different days, please choose the day most convenient for you.
  • If you are unable to drop off your gifts on a weekday, volunteers will be available to accept your gifts on Sunday, December 6, from 4:30 to 6:00pm
  • In case of inclement weather on your scheduled date, please drop-off your gifts the following day.

43 days until distribution week!

The 2015 holiday season is in full swing for Adopt-A-Family.  Our elves are busy reviewing applications, matching families to donors, and getting those wish lists out the door as fast as possible.
Thank you to the 191 donors who have already sent in a donor reply card.  We truly appreciate your dedication to the program and your excitement to start shopping.  Attached, you'll find a copy of the Donor Information Sheet for your convenience.

Haven’t received your wish list yet?
Don’t worry, we get a new batch of families each week.  We match requests in the order in which they were received.  Things tend to pick up around the end of October, so you should have your wish list soon.
Haven’t sent in your donor reply card yet?
There’s still time.  We expect about 800 more families to apply for the program over the next 3 weeks.  Fill out the online form or print and send the paper form to submit your adoption request.

Interested in volunteering during distribution week?
We’ll send out information on how to register during the first week of November.  In addition to the paper form, registration will be available via an online website called SignUpGenius.  We appreciate your patience as we make some modifications to our scheduling process.

After Decades of Service, Sandra Soares Leaves Adopt-a-Family

Since 1990, Sandra Soares has volunteered for the Adopt-A-Family program, helping to ensure that every child in Woonsocket has gifts to open at Christmas each year. The program has provided presents for some 41,888 children in the city since 1992, filling a wish list for every single family that's applied for help since 2005.

Soares has served on the Board of Directors since its inception in 1993 and was elected board president in 1995, the same year the organization became an official 501c3 nonprofit. She was named program coordinator in 2003 and has served as executive director since 2013, continuing to grow an efficient and respected city charity purely through volunteer labor.

Dedicating approximately 30 hours a week from October through late December, in addition to her full-time work as a realtor, she says it's time to call it quits. "It takes a tremendous amount of time and energy. It's a full-time job," Soares said.

Notes From Some Thankful Families

During the second week of last December, 140 volunteers unloaded nearly 5,000 bags, boxes, and bikes brought by friends to the Elks Lodge in Woonsocket. These were gifts from kind and generous people in the community who committed to giving the happiness and excitement of Christmas to Woonsocket families in need.

When the week was over, 2,039 children from 981 families had received these gifts. These children were blessed by the efforts of people who will never know them; people who show the true spirit of the holiday.

As always, we thank our faithful donors for bringing Christmas smiles to these 2,039 children.

Here are some letters we received from the families.

Distribution Week is Here

Today starts Distribution Week here at Adopt-a-Family.

This is the 7 days when our donors bring us 4,000 bikes, bags and boxes of gifts to give to kids of low-income folks who struggle monthly to feed and house their families. When the holidays come, there's nothing left in the budget for gifts for their children.

It's a big job but through the efforts of everyone, this week 2,207 children will receive gifts of much-needed clothing and much-desired toys! Thank you all!

We Bring Out the Best in People

An email we received this morning:

Good Morning,

My family and I went to see the Christmas Carol this past Sunday.  It was a wonderful production.  As we all sat there watching the Cratchit Family and their struggles through the Christmas Holiday Season, it made us realize that there are young children out there who need help from those of us who are more fortunate.  My family has been a donor of Adopt-A-Family before; probably about (6) years ago.  It was an awesome feeling!

In light of this, after the show, we got together and decided to forego all Christmas Secret Santa Exchanges in favor of giving a family Christmas Gifts for their Children.

I have attached the completed application.

We Need Your Help

Here's the good news:

As of today we have 910 families with approximately 1,900 children matched with donors. That means these kids will be receiving gifts of much-needed clothing and much-desired toys and games for Christmas.

Here's the bad news:

We have approximately 315 kids in 125 families with no donors.

After ten years of saying YES to every eligible family who applied, it looks like we will be saying NO to some children this year.

The number of families who have come to us for help has not increased significantly but the number of donors who have offered their help has decreased.

The amount of families asking for help will likely increase as we get closer to Distribution Week. Even though the last date to apply was November 15, we always have families in crisis come to us for help after a house fire, eviction, fleeing domestic abuse, illness, theft, etc. We always find a way.

We know everyone has been affected by the poor economy in the last year. So if you find it difficult to provide for a child on your own, team up with a co-worker, a neighbor, even others in your family.

So our message is plain:  Please help by offering to provide some gifts of clothes and toys for a needy child. If you can help please fill out a Donor Reply Card and get it back to us as soon as possible.

A child will thank you.
